Pronunciation and meaning of Scottish name
I have come across the name Laoghaire. I'm pretty sure it is scottish and feminine. The pronunciation is what I most want to know, and if you know the meaning that would be good also!
Thanks

Ahem...
Don't have my book to hand, but I'm fairly sure that name is Irish/Scottish and male. It's the name the surname Leary/O'Leary comes from.

Laoghaire
Laoghaire is a male name. It's a form of the Old Irish name "Láegaire" which means "calf-herder". A newer version of that name "Laoire" is pronounced "LAY-re", so maybe the older versions sound a little bit like that? I don't know...
Diana Gabaldon used Laoghaire as a female name in her books, but I won't really trust her! She used "Annikje" as a "Swedish" name as well (haha!).
