The meaning of the Indian name is correct (grammatical derivation in my post at http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=770201&board=gen Incidentally, it also means conscience), but I take exception to calling it a Hindu name. This is a common misnomer: barring names of persian and arabic origin which are used as formal names by the muslims, there are very few names which are used by one religion alone. Sure there are cases of distinctly Parsi, or distinctly Christian names, but there are few Hindu names not also used by people of other religions, especially Jains and Buddhists. And, Bengali muslims often go by an informal name, which in form is identically to what would be called a Hindu name otherwise.

The point is these are Indian names of Sanskrit origin, and I think we should stick to that. For the few names that are actually Hindu, we should say so.
