Up until just a few decades ago, certainly in the memory of many adults living today, Dick was a perfectly normal first name as well. Derived, of course, from Richard. I also know a family with the surname Dick but in their case it is the German word meaning "thick, fat." However, one of the younger members has changed his surname to Dueck (pronounced Duke).
