origin/meaning of my surname
I'm research ing origin/meaning of my last name. It's currently spelled Lastufka, but was actually spelled Lastuvka when my ancestor's were in Bohemia in the 1800s (they emigrated to the U.S. around 1900; they were from the Hlinsko region). We were told that our name means "swallows"; however, swallows in Czech is vlaštovky. Any suggestion as to the exact origin/meaning of my name? Thanks

Yes, the origin of your surname may indeed mean swallow. It stems from it at least. Czech is an incredibly flex-y language and you can create countless variations of a certain word by flexing/ bending/ transmuting it:-)
"Lastuvka" is a Slavic name but German as a language we " had to accept" for centuries by force made an impact on many words and names. Lastuvka can be seen in many forms and variations - as proper Czech Laštuvka/ Laštůvka/Laštúvka forms or it´s crippled variations that can come as Lastufka, Lastufek, Lastofka etc.

It actually means "swallow". The correct word for a swallow in Czech is vlaštovka. But, because it was hard to spell for our ancestors, the "v" was put aside and they spelled it laštovka (or laštůvka, which is dialect). Because English people (or other foreigners) didn't know how Czech ortography works, they spelled the name as they heard it - Lastufka. So the way from "vlaštovka" (swallow) to Lastufka would be:1 Vlaštovka
2 Laštovka / Laštůvka (variant form)
3 Laštůfka
4 Lastufka
