This site has some information on Sawyer if you click on the link in this reply. It's a surname so it is used for both boys and girls, although it is currently more common for boys. Tom Sawyer is probably the most famous person with the name Sawyer. He was a Mark Twain character named after a "sawyer", sunken logs in the Mississippi that were dangerous to boats.
