Princess Adhara and Kamal have had two more children - Calypso and Leolin - and they are engaged at last, much to the relief of the general population. Princess Callista has been carrying on her secret relationship with Sir Archibald for five years, and has now taken an even more secret lover, Baron Rhodri, on the side. Princess Violetta, the self-proclaimed most proper of all her sisters, is now engaged to the High Priest, Shiloh, and is looking forward to a life as Queen of the Church.
Just as things seem to be settling down, two of the princesses find a disturbing item while looking through some old possessions in one of the attics. It's a diary, belonging to their great-grandfather, and as Violetta and Callista flip through the pages they discover that he had a particular paramour he seemed to like very much... and that she had a child. His oldest son, King Gwydion's father, was secretly illegitimate. And that means King Gwydion and the whole family are also illegitimate. The King should not be their father at all, but their father's cousin. The girls are shocked by the unearthing of this family secret. Callista thinks they should tell people the truth at cost of their throne - or at least tell their parents, so they know they're ruling unjustly. But Violetta is appalled by this idea; she wants to destroy the diary and cover up the secret so that the family can keep their position. They have a huge argument, ending in Violetta throwing the diary out of the window towards the moat. When Callista rushes outside to retrieve it, she can't find it. Her sister hopes it sunk to the bottom of the moat, but Callista is frustrated. Now no one will believe her if she ever tries to reveal the truth, and she will have to live knowing that they don't deserve the throne.
