-- S [6] Randolph Jasper CastletownOrlando and Clementine visited The Quail's Nest with their three children, as they did each year. Lord Gervase, who often accompanied them during their visits, sent forth his apologies, as he had to attend to family matters, and would thus be unable to make it. Lady Xanthe was clearly discontented - something Orlando picked up on. He decided the matter of her hypothetical affair with Lord Gervase, which he hoped he was imagining, must be resolved. Thus, he inveigled his sister-in-law to talk with him unreservedly, as they once used to.Orlando asked her baldly whether she was having an affair with his friend. She did not try to refute the imputation. He called her foolish and callous for cheating on his brother and besmirching the Castletown name - while, at her age, it seemed unlikely that Xanthe would have any more children, if she did, their legitimacy would be called into question. She retorted that Orlando cared little for his brother and his name, and only chastised her for her affair with Gervase because he was jealous, and wanted Gervase for himself. This was a dangerous, slanderous claim, and Orlando stormed out of the parlour. No matter how many times Cassian or Clementine asked him what his argument with Xanthe concerned, he remained silent. Orlando and Xanthe, once as close as brother and sister, now pointedly ignored each others' presence. Orlando no longer brought along Lord Gervase with him during his visits to Albion, and did not invite him over to his and Clementine's château in Franconia when Cassian visited with his wife, children, and mother.Lady Xanthe considered writing to Lord Gervase, but realised she did not even know his address. The only person she could ask was Clementine, and that would raise suspicions. Thus, the entanglement fizzled out, for which Xanthe blamed her brother-in-law. He acknowledged - if only to himself - that there had been a grain of truth to her accusation. This, he would do nothing about. While he justified himself mentally by saying he was a dutiful husband and would not act against the law - both the law of the land and natural law - the truth was that the man who had faced down the enemy's gargantuan, ferocious armies without a flinch was not daring enough to act on his feelings. The next battle he marched into was not the first with impossible odds. This time, however, the Albionese miscalculated gravely during their skirmish with the Lisitaian army. They were outnumbered 1 to 5, and the Lisataians tore through their legions, mowing down hordes of Albionese. Lieutenant Colonel Orlando Castletown was among the men captured. He asked his captors for pen and paper, a request they saw little reason to deny him. He wrote a long, fervent letter to Cassian, which they had not done for years. In it, he revealed that Xanthe had an affair with Gervase. And then, rather than sustain torture and humiliation, he impaled himself on his bayonet. His wife did not receive his body, but his brother received his letter. At first, he could not believe that Xanthe could have betrayed him. He questioned her, and, while she tried to deny it at first, her guilt became evident. Enraged, Cassian divorced her. The divorce shocked the nation. Both Cassian and Xanthe suffered from the exposure, as did their sons.Cassian, devastated by both the divorce and his brothers death, took solace in a secret affair with a 36 year-old former courtesan, who gave birth to their son a year ago. The boy has not, as of yet, been legitimised. 🕊️❣️🌻💌🌻❣️🕊️masculine list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/191050/124079
