Jaxi never knew her parents, for they abandoned her as soon as she was born with more draconic features than them. Her foster mother was no better, only caring for her out of a sense of pity. When Jaxi was a toddler, she was left with an inventor who was at death's door and was in need of someone to carry on his life's work. He would die six years later, leaving Jaxi to finish what he started. The clockwork construct he had built to protect her was her only companionship, and Jaxi, despite being an excellent reader, had a tenuous grasp when it came to actually speaking the common pidgin, which a later party member would teach her.
If someone hands you a gun and tells you to point it at someone else or at yourself and you oblige them by choosing, you’ve missed the very obvious third person you could have pointed it at.
