Fleur de lys (or
Fleur de lis) means
Lily.
Symbol of royalty in Europe. It was chosen to show the descendency from
King David - since it was already the symbol of royalty in
Israel: the lily represents the Jews who are divided into 3 categories (like the 3 'parts' of the lily): the Israelites (majority), the Cohanim and the Levites.
At a period the worst criminals were branded with a lily to be easily recognized and to show the 'punishment' of the crown on them.
