Avi and
Shiloh Rosenfield are quite the unlikely couple--Avi from an Orthodox Jewish background and
Shiloh from an eccentric single-parent family. Of course, they say opposites attract and so, the story of how
Avi and
Shiloh came to be married.
Avi was raised in
Virginia, in a strong community of Orthodox Jews. When he turned sixteen,
Avi made the decision that he would like to see what the rest of the world had to offer. So, he remained at home until he turned eighteen, then decided to enroll in college.
He attended a large university in Boston, Massachusetts and tried anything and everything that looked like fun. In his sophomore year, he met
Shiloh.
Shiloh and her two siblings were raised by their mother--a self-proclaimed artist whose main job was painting and sculpting, but to bring in enough money also worked at a local department store.
Shiloh grew up with a tendency towards the arts and has always loved ceramics.
Shiloh also learned what it was like to move around a lot and earn her own keep. From the time she was thirteen,
Shiloh worked wherever someone would hire her--babysitting, dog walking, stocking grocery store shelves, or in customer service. By the time she was eighteen,
Shiloh was ready to be on her own. She got into a Boston university and worked her way through all four years. In her freshman year, she met
Avi.
She was sitting at a table studying for a French test and he was ordering a double cafe mocha latte from the college cafe.
Shiloh happened to glance up and was immediately attracted to the tall dark haired guy at the counter.
Avi turned around unexpectedly and their eyes met.
Avi paid for his coffee and went to the table where a pretty girl with light brown hair and startling green eyes pored over a foreign language book.
Avi had not meant to distract
Shiloh from her studies, but they ended up talking for over two hours--until
Shiloh's French class. It was the only French test
Shiloh ever failed.
Avi and
Shiloh dated for the next two years. At the end of
Avi's senior year,
Shiloh knew that they were going to get married.
Avi graduated with two degrees--one in Journalism (photojournalism) and one in Anthropology.
Shiloh still had one year left and she hoped to graduate with a degree in Music (she plans to become a music teacher). They spent the summer visiting each other and in early
August,
Avi proposed to
Shiloh.
It was a lovely romantic dinner,
Shiloh had to admit.
Avi was not always a romantic thinker, but he seemed to plan their dinner for a specific reason.
Shiloh hoped she knew what that reason was. After a delicious meal,
Avi took
Shiloh to the edge of the nearby lake and got down on one knee.
Shiloh let him propose, then shouted for joy and threw her arms around his neck. They were going to be married!
Throughout her senior year,
Shiloh balanced her schoolwork, time with
Avi, time with friends, and planning a wedding for that summer. However, she pulled it off wonderfully and she and
Avi were married on
July 18th.
Avi and
Shiloh's wedding was elaborate, traditional, and very very beautiful. They invited just about everyone that they knew and held a large reception afterward.
Avi is now working as a freelance photographer.
He has not forgotten his Jewish heritage, but would not trade his life with
Shiloh for anything.Shiloh has found work teaching junior high music and piano and flute lessons. She remembers how tough it was growing up and she wants to provide a safe, stable home for her future children.
