Re: Tell me what you think of these unisex combos. (m)
Ambrose Courtney - sounds like a boy to me. Courtney usually sounds like a girly "bimbo" name to me but in this combo it sounds more like a posh surname-middle name and I'd imagine someone who comes from old money. Ambrose has that vibe by itself too, but Courtney makes it less cool and mysterious and more rich English guy. I can't picture Ambrose on a girl.
Jamie Adele - Jamie is purely neutral to me but Adele makes it sound like a girl. This name makes me think of a celebrity, probably a pop singer or an actress.
Palmer Hadley - this one sounds like a frat boy to me
Sydney Jay - could be any type of person but Sydney is 100% girl for me. Sidney could go either way, but Sidney for a boy would be more... snide? than Sydney or Sidney on a girl. Sydney especially is just kind of a girl next door name but it could fit a lot of different characters.
Raven Asher - This makes me think boy, but Raven Ash would be more purely unisex to me. I like it either way. This is one where I wouldn't be so tempted to try and guess a binary gender.
Alexis Gayle - Both girls to me, but different generations. Alexis is a teenager on the cheerleading team and Gayle is her mom who likes to gossip with the church ladies or something. (Gale is totally unisex for me, but not Gayle. And I've met too many girls named Alexis to see it on a boy)
Joss Avery - This one is solidly unisex, although Joss as a full name instead of a nickname makes me think boy. This makes me think of a theatre person.
Sheridan Murphy - hmm. My brain doesn't want to see this as a combo, it just sees Murphy as a last name. Sheridan makes me think girl, but Murphy as a given name is all boy. I suppose I'd think it was probably a boy if the middle name is actually a given name, but it could also be a girl with a last name as a middle name.
Jewel Chandler - Jewel seems girly to me. I've only ever met one Chandler and it was a girl, but I'd probably expect it to be a boy on its own. Jewel would seem more unisex as a middle name.
Riley Blair - All boy for me.
Waverly Hunter - Hunter would normally be all boy, but Waverly seems girly to me so I'd assume this was a girl with a boyish/surname middle name.
Billie Devin - the "ie" makes me think this is a girl. Billy Devin would sound like a boy, but I always think of Billie as 'the girl spelling'.
Darcy Meredith - I would definitely assume this was a girl. I've only met one boy named Meredith and he was very old and didn't even go by Meredith. Darcy as a first name seems girly to me but I could see it on a boy too, just not with Meredith. Like if it was Darcy Ambrose I would assume boy.
Leighton Harley - I'd assume it's a boy. -Leigh names and some -ton names like Ashton and Peyton are common for girls but Leighton still seems boyish, and so do other -ton names. Harley could go either way.
Florence Hollis - Florence is definitely girly to me. Hollis is pretty neutral, the surnameyness makes it masculine and the similarity to Holly makes it feminine, and "is" doesn't sound like a particularly gendered suffix, so it all evens out. If I just heard that someone's first name was Hollis I wouldn't be able to guess a gender.
Kendall Rae - girly. Kendall's been girlified (especially as a first name) and the "ae" version of Rae is also girly.
Dale Quinn - boy. I can't imagine Dale on a girl, and Quinn naturally sounds masculine in this combo. Quinn can be very neutral but it's also easy to make it lean masculine.
Kirby Allyn - I'd guess boy. Allyn by itself is more neutral (the "lyn" seems feminine at first but I've seen boys called Martyn and Kevyn/Keffyn so I wouldn't assume), but Kirby (aside from the pink thing) just reads as an outdated boy name.
Schuyler Monroe - Definitely boy. If it was Skyler Monroe I'd think more neutral, but Schuyler looks boyish. Monroe reads as a manly sounding surname name with Schuyler, but if it's paired with a girly first name I would read it as a reference to Marilyn Monroe.
Morgan Bailey - Okay, this one I can't tell at all. Pure neutral.
Haven Emerson - Also very neutral, but I think Haven leans feminine for me.
Whitney Aubrey - Girl. I've heard of both of these names on boys, but only ever seen them on girls. I might expect to see one of these names as a middle name for a boy with a more masculine first name, but together they're girly. And seeing either of them as a first name makes me assume girl and not even notice that I could be wrong. Maybe with Aubrey I'd guess girl but think "well, maybe it's not a girl, but my guess is pretty safe" vs. Whitney I'd just think "that's a girl" and give no more thought to it.
Allison Kelly - I've met several boys named Kelly but this combo is all girl. And Kelly still reads as girly to me too. When I meet a boy named Kelly my brain kind of changes it from "Kelly" to "Kell+y", as in "not the girl name Kelly, but the unisex name Kell with a nickname suffix added on". Allison, the sound feels unisex but the name itself is 100% girl for me.
I like these:
Raven Asher
Morgan Bailey (more for a boy though, just because I don't really like Bailey on a girl. Bailey is a lot less common for boys where I live but I prefer it on boys)
Haven Emerson
+ Florence Hollis (I like it but I don't think it sounds unisex)I don't know how to explain this, but Raven Asher feels more nonbinary and Morgan Bailey feels more 'this person probably has a binary gender but I don't know what it is'. It's something about Bailey? idk!
Haven Emerson also sounds like a name I might guess is nonbinary, although Haven feels *slightly* girly to me.
