Apparently something like 80% of Americans with the first name McKay were born in Utah (I saw it on a list of "Utah names" recently, so I think of that - McKay and McKade were common for boys while McKell, McCall, McKaylee were common for girls, especially in the 90s). Also it sounds a bit innocent and cheerful to me in a "can-do" sort of way.

The only McKay I know is an ex-Mormon from Utah!

I don't know any IRL but the first one I thought of was a youtuber who makes ex-Mormon / ex-cult videos.

Yeah...the BtN submitted section says that it is probably used by Mormons because of David O. McKay, but now that I think about it, except for McKade, those are all very similar to Michael and Michaela, so I suspect Mormons liked those but wanted something more unique seeming.
