When I studied in Spain, my host mother was named Maria de los Angeles, but she just went by Angeles or Maria Angeles. It was easy for everyone to pronounce in Spanish, but my family in America called her Ang-a-leese, kinda like a hybrid of Annalise and Angela. So, very nice name in Spanish, kinda hard in English.
And of course, you have the obvious Los Angeles, California association.
Geles [KHEH-lehs] is a pet form of Ángeles.Compound names such as María Ángeles or María de los Ángeles are sometimes shortened to Mariángeles [ma-RYANG-kheh-lehs]. I guess that counts as a pet form? I know of at least two people that go by that name.
"Ángeles" is not complete. This word is used together with "De Los", remaining "De Los Ángeles".
Not necessarily.
