Meaning & History

Means "soldier" in Lakota. From the Lakota akíčhita "soldier, army, military, troops, police".

Historically this would have been a term applied to warrior members of society whenever they were on duty (as camp police, during a communal hunt or war path, as scouts, etc). In modern times, it's sometimes applied to policemen or soldiers of the US army.

This is the name of a character on HBO's series 'Westworld'.
