Akemi became popular as 明美 (bright + beautiful) entering the top 10 in Japan in 1957. It peaked at #1 in 1965 and left the top 10 after 1968.
It is famous for being one of the first names not ending in -ko becoming extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s after the Japanese top 10 had been dominated by -ko ending names for several decades and therefore changing the trend to names with different endings, a trend that would lead to hardly any names ending in -ko being placed in the top 10 by the 1990s (the only exceptions are Momoko, Nanako and Riko which entered for one year (Nanako) or a few years each).

This is a very lovely name. I've spent hours searching for good sounding Japanese names and Akemi probably is one of the best that I have found. A great aspect of this name is that even though it's Japanese it doesn't really step out of the normal by sounding really foreign in America. This is a name that would seem to be more acceptable than Michiko or Katsuhito in a classroom full of first graders. Although that really all depends. Also, Akemi could be a good substitute for Kimberly. They sound alike but mean totally different things. I would for sure consider naming my daughter Akemi. =)
