Meaning & History

From Arabic الخنساء (al-Khansā), which is said to mean "the snub-nosed" or "the gazelle". This was the nickname of a 7th-century Arab poet who was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Her birth name was Tumāḍir bint ‛Amr.

This name appears to be very rare; as an Arabic feminine name, the form Khansa (without the definite article al-) is given more frequently.
