This is my name. German pronunciation: ahl-oh-ees. The 'S' is definitely pronounced.
This was my great grandfather's name. It was pronounced ah-loo-ee. The "s" was silent. My family is German and French and I was born in Germany as well.
I used this name for my son as a middle name/family name.
Alois from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Has the best jokes.
Well, I think Alois is a very attractive name. Manly, elegant and powerful. That's what Alois tells me. And I do not understand why there is so much contempt for being only the name of the father of the great German dictator. Honestly, did anyone know before discovering it here? Because I do not think so. Does anyone know the name of Mussolini's father? Or Stalin's? Perhaps it is better not to use the name Leopold because it is the name of the dictator Leopold II of Belgium? Or better yet, better not to name our daughters Eva because it is the name of the wife Adolf Hitler, who is also a well-known historical figure. I mean, I partially understand about Adolf, but the Alois thing is over the top. If you don't like Alois, I understand. Say it without problems, but don't make that excuse. Actually, if you call your son Alois, no one is going to be shocked because it is the name of Hitler's father (they won't even know). They will most likely be shocked and tell you how beautiful or ugly it is.
Boring! The pronunciation flops too.
I do not think many people will pay attention to Hitler's relatives. There are so many other namesakes.
Looks somehow French to me.
Alois Alzheimer was the psychiatrist who discovered Alzheimer's disease. A lot of diseases, including that one, are named after the people who discover them.
Watching a French documentary about Hitler's family and they're pronouncing it alo-WEES.
I don't think it's a nice sounding name. Also, the fact that this is the name of Hitler's father makes it even worse. Alois Hitler was pretty mean himself, and he cheated on his wives. As far as I know, I don't have any ancestors with this name, and that puts a big smile on my face.
Although I have a hard time finding the correct way to say the name, I think it's very beautiful. As of where I live (USA), finding this name on somebody is like finding a needle in the haystack. All I hear around me are names such as Michael, John, Jacob and Matthew. I'd love a friend named Alois at my school.
Oh my gosh I think this name is SO cute! I pronounce it Ah-Lois, though. I didn't know this was the name of the horrible Hitler's father, but it still doesn't ruin the name for me. I'd name my child this if it was a boy.
Alois (1703-1763) was the son of Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria and his second wife Theresa.
A famous bearer of this name is Alois Trancy from the anime Black Butler II.

My absolute FAVORITE name! Very traditional name, especially here in Bavaria.
The current pope, Benedict XVI, was born Joseph Alois Ratzinger.
I like this name, but the association with the horrible father of the even more horrible Hitler has made it unusable.
I always believed it to be pronounced to rhyme with "voice".

German pronunciation: AW-lo-ees. [noted -ed]
Traditional German name, especially in Bavaria (south-east). Considered very old fashioned, rarely given to newborns today.
This was the name of Hitler's father.
I don't think Hitler's father was heard of enough to ruin this name. That said, I don't really like this name much.
