Meaning & History

A water goddess from Continental Celtic mythology known from inscriptions in the area of modern-day France and Germany.

Her name has only been left in its Latinized form Ancamna; there have, however, been attempts to reconstruct a Gaulish form: Ankambona, which has then been interpreted to mean "very crooked river" (from Proto-Celtic *an-kambo-abon-ā).
