On a girl not frilly but soft and sweet, and on a boy the same, but neutral in sound enough to be handsome and masculine with a certain gentle charm. Lovely on both boys and girls.
This name (it's English pronunciation), stripped of all association, just going by the sound... is so boring to me. Doesn't seem like a suitable name as it lacks any depth of warmth. I don't get why people like the name. I will say, in Spanish, Angel is such a gorgeous men's name.
I like it for a boy's name
If I was able to conceive children, I would be tempted to name a son Angel, but very nervous about it too.
I like Angel for a girl but not for a boy. I think it sounds cute I like Angel better then Angelia.
Angel is such a misleading name. Use Angelo because statistically it's a more successful name and can bring in large sums of cash. And don't name your daughter Angel either. Name them something like Lucas.
Angel for boys, Angela for girls.
I don't think this sounds masculine at all. But it's really cute on a girl!
I think the name Angel is beautiful! It's such a rare unique name!
I love that it works for males, females, and even non-binary people! Please, don't hate on this name (or any name).
I like it better for a girl, honestly.
My mom had a friend named Angel. I like it to be honest with you. For some reason I prefer it on a boy. I don’t know why, I just do. In my opinion Angela, Angeline, Angelica, or Angelina is much prettier.
I don't hate this name but I prefer names of individual angels, like Ariel or Raphael to just Angel.
I know three people with this as a first name. All of them have Mexican backgrounds. They are all boys! If you want it as a girl name, have Angelia instead of Angel. That way it won't get confusing.
I know that this is unisex, but I can't imagine a boy named Angel. This just sounds too feminine!
Why would anyone give their baby boy this name? It’s too feminine.
Angel is better on females in my opinion, it just seems feminine to me.
This is what I named my middle daughter, Angel Patricia, and I think it is a wonderful name. The family called her Angie. Angel Patricia Kahn, 1989-2011.
Somebody’s disliking all the negative comments, sorry kid, gotta tell you the truth but they are right.
Not sure you want to name your child this but if you meet someone with this name you have some free pickup lines, all you gotta do is find out their name is- but it's a good name.
YUCK! Such a super-sounding name, totally. Angie is much better and sounds better to my ears.
Angel is a bit too common for me.
I like it for girls and boys.
I love the name Angel, especially for a boy. I think it's a very good and sweet yet strong name.
I prefer it for girls more than boys.
This is a really corny name to me, no matter which gender it's used on. I like Angela and Angelo better.
I think this is a great name.
I like the name no matter what. Angel, you should be proud of your name!
Ehh. I like Angelica for a girl and Angelo for a boy.
My name's Angel and I’m a man. I find it nice to have that name. Even though some people find it feminine I could just say call me Anhel my name in Spanish even though that’s what people should call me since I’m Hispanic. I just realized why people ask me if I preferred English or Spanish, it’s still my name but in both languages. It doesn’t bother me how you say it, in Japanese my name is Tenshi. Sounds cool.
I have a friend named Angel and she is a girl. I think it’s more of a feminine name as it reminds me of a sweet girl. I don’t really like it as a boy's name though. I feel like it would be interesting to see a grandfather at the age of 70 with the name Angel. It doesn’t sound right to me. But I really like this name. It’s cute and very lively.
Angelus is a cool name.
Omg that is a good name.
I love this name! It’s very cute and elegant! It’s so feminine. Maybe too feminine for a boy! It’s an okay-ish name for a boy, but it’s lovely on a girl. Personally, I wouldn’t name a boy Angel, because I fear he would get beaten up. I would name a girl this because she wouldn’t get harassed and it would suit her personality of a girly girl, just like Juliana and Tiana. In my opinion, it suits a girly girl better than a tomboy, and a janegirl better than a boyish boy!
I like it for both genders. I like many forms of this name, this is why I've never thought seriously about it.
But it is right and positive!
Angels aren't dead people! :/ They are heavenly beings!
The issue is that angels are dead people.
What if Angel is not an Angel?
I love this name. But it is definitely more of a girl name. I don't like this name on a boy though. I think this name is very elegant and girly.
My name is Angel actually. I don’t see anything wrong with it, and it can be used for both genders. I know males with it, but I’ve never actually met a female like myself with it. A lot of people say that my name fits me perfectly but I’m not so sure about that. A lot of the time I get comments on how it’s a beautiful name and sometimes people like to make fun of it. It’s not even funny how many people misspell it though, and that can be pretty infuriating on how you think it’s spelled 'Angle'. It’s a good name though.
My name is Angel I don't have any problem with it, I like it because you don't hear it very often and I like rare or strange names.
I am Angel that was my name at birth, would I name my kids this, no. I think kids have enough issues fitting in and a name like this leads to teasing. Angel did you fall from heaven, Angel where are your wings? Then of course the song My Angel is a centerfold, I had to deal with that coming out as a freshman, need I say more.
Angel... oh how I love this name. Angel! Angel! Yes! All hail ANGEL!
Not sure how I feel about this on its own. As a nickname? Sure. But as a first name, it's a bit odd. Some names where Angel is a suitable nickname are Angela, Angelina, Evengaline, Evangelina, Angelika.
Thanks to "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", this name is more gender neutral even though it has been for centuries. Many hispanic males are named Angel along with Jesus, Raphael, Gabriel etc..
Honestly, I've never seen this name as particularly cutesy or sickening. Contrary to popular belief, angels in the Bible are not androgynous pretty boys with feathery wings, white robes, and curly blond hair. They're actually frightening in appearance, and they can be very cruel. The Bible shows them destroying entire cities and reproducing with mortal women. Think about that the next time someone suggests Angel sounds cutesy.
This name flouts a bit on the title side, as Archangel was a title. But then again, angels were messengers and that is similar to prophet.
My eldest son is named Angel. I only knew one girl named Angel and it was her nickname. The others I knew have been men. I am Hispanic and my husband is white. We are from Texas and it isn't a strange name at all. Not, I agree, for a girl- it's not so flattering. Kinda sounds like a stripper or something like Cherry, Angel, etc. My son has never been teased. He is 6 and no one I have ever known with the name was teased. For a man it is very romantic and masculine if anything. It reminds me of a tall handsome man in a romance novel. I don't think he could have a more perfect name. He plays baseball and I think it's very suitable, kinda like Babe Ruth. I know Babe was his nickname but it has a good ring. I think Angel is the same way.
I think it's fine as a nickname for either sex -- but just as a nickname. As a whole name, it sounds too young, to immature, and dare I say it, even stripperish. As a nickname, it still sounds like all that, but you at least know that the kid has a full name to fall back on; a name like Angelo, Arcangelo, Angelica, Evangeline, etc. I think I like it slightly more on a male, simply because it's less common and because I've had negative experiences with girls named Angel who were extremely bratty. I've only ever met one guy called Angel, but I thought it suited him far better than it did any of the girls I'd met.
My name is Angel Love and I thought my name's a weird one. I got used to it though, and now I love it. It's like I'm an Angel of love. :p.
It goes with Grace or Faith for girls
Angel Grace
Angel FaithOr- Davis for a boy
Angel Davis.
I think the name Angel is absolutely perfect. I've only met amazing people with this name. I see Angel slightly more as a boy's name because it seems a bit more masculine. Angel to me is not corny or cheesy. I love this name. I suggest this for both genders. Its okay if a "bad boy" or "bad girl" is named after this. What about Lucifer and the other fallen angels? It is a common Hispanic name.
Sure, this name works for either gender but I immensely hate it either way. To cut to the chase, Angel in my opinion is a very tacky and most of all, cheesy and corny name. I mean, it just doesn't make a decent or practical name for numerous, obvious reasons. We can blame the Hispanics for one of the main causes of this name stationed round the top of the charts (U.S. I'm speaking of) because they use this name left and right no matter if expecting a son or a daughter.
I think the name Angel is quite tacky, like Precious or Princess. It's the sort of name a teenager would choose because she thinks it's cute. Angela or Angelica would look much better on someone's C.V. and would be taken far more seriously than Angel.
A very beautiful, blessed name. Both genders can pull this name off just fine. :)
I think the name's very beautiful.
It's funny how it's a girl's name in some countries yet a boy's in others, and then in the U.S. it's unisex, lol.
This name is beautiful... It is simple yet at the same time elegant. Also the spiritual aspect is mezmerizing. My daughter will be named Angel Aaliyah ♥.
I'd never heard of the name Angel for boys in the US outside of the Hispanic pronunciation An-HEL. But I recently met a little Caucasian boy named Angel, pronounced the English way, and he's the sweetest most adorable little thing, but I can't help but think he's going to be teased mercilessly when he's a teenager. It's just a very feminine name in English-speaking cultures. For girls, this name falls under the cutesy cheesy category for me (ex. Heaven, Serenity, Destiny...). Okay, it's not QUITE as tacky as the names I just listed, but I'm not a fan. It sounds better for a pet than a human.
How corny as a name, on either gender. It might be pronounced un-hel and that's fine but spell it Onhel then because NOBODY is going to pronounce Angel that way, sorry.
I used to think this was a very pretty-sounding feminine name. But then I met a horrid Angel in middle school, and that kind of ruined it for me. Then it was ruined even further once I grew up and realized that it's kind of tacky as well.I agree with Dawson, though. It reminds me of Angel the Series so a guy named Angel isn't as tacky in my mind. I actually kind of like it, although I would never use it in real life and in stories it'd be too much like the David Boreanaz character.
I like the name Angel, it's pretty. My middle name has Angel in it. It's Angelise.
I'm not a extreme fan of the name, but whenever I hear the name Angel, I think of the show "Angel" and David Boreanaz. Not a bad namesake :) I prefer on a guy for that reason.
It's good on a guy, but on a girl it sounds cheesy, tacky, and modern.
What-the-what? I can't believe this name is number 37(!) on the BOYS list for 2009. That Angel is a more popular name than Kevin and Justin. Too literal, and I feel forces people into a certain impression of you, without giving you a chance to make your own first impression. Imagine your sweet little boy as a grown man at a job interview, the employer thinking "this guy must come from some batty family". If you want an angelic name, go for Gabriel!
Normally, I'm not a fan of word names. But I like this name for some weird reason. I would not use it, though. It's to childish. As for the gender debate, I like the English pronunciation for a girl, but the Spanish pronunciation for a boy.
I don't like the name Angel. It takes the personality out of a person. What if your child was devil-like? Go for Angeline or Angelina.
I can see this name working on a man, but not a woman, and probably not very well at all in an English speaking country.
I know two people named Angel. One's a boy, one's a girl. They're not teased at all. And I think this is a good name for both genders. :) Too see this on a person gives you a whole 'new look at the name.' It doesn't matter if they're nice or anything, it just gives you a look at what this name is like on a person. And honestly, I think it's good.
I just LOVE this name, for a boy and for a girl. Actually, I love all the word names. Angel sounds beautiful.
I think, like many other people, that Angel isn't really the best choice for a name, as many of the Angels are really not much of an Angel themselves. It's the same with a lot of names. For instance, Delight. If you were to call a child Delight, intending the child was an absolute 'sweetie' and they were a bit on the 'rough and tumble' side, it could be quite difficult. For the child's sake, I would avoid it.
I actually prefer this name for a guy. It's a unisex name after all, and there are plenty of guy names used for girls.
Angel (the English-girl version) is kind of an ironic name, don't you think? Because every girl who's named Angel never seems to be angelic. Am I right? Think about it. Angel sounds like a snotty little bratty girl's name. Sorry to all you "angels" out there. But it really does. I like Angela.
Now seriously, imagine naming your child this, only to discover that he wasn't a sweet little angel at all. If he was naughty at school, the teacher might say to the crazy parents 'your little angel is a little devil'. So really, it's like naming your child Devil.
This sounds way too much like a nickname on girls and sounds too weird to me on a boy.
I like this name, though it's very unusual! I don't think I would name my kid this, boy or girl!
In English usage, this name immediately makes me think that the parents are either trailer park residents, teen mothers who think the name sounds really pretty, or sappy young Christian parents who name the child on a post-partum high. The name is incredibly tacky, and will not age on the bearer well at all.
Personally, I think Angel is an incredibly tacky name. I pity any boy whose name is Angel. If you have to name someone Angel, please make sure it's a girl. It's still tacky, though. On a side note, I know a girl named Angel and she is anything but an Angel.
I actually think it's a stupid name for a girl because if you actually ever read the bible, aren't angels potrayed as more masculine? MICHAEL the arcANGEL. Plus in many Spanish speaking countries it is a boys name. If you call a girl Angel short for a name like Angela, fine, but don't give it to her as her real name.
Angel is a beautiful name!
This is a good name for a girl, but I can't imagine it on a guy. No offense to any guys named Angel out there!
This is one name that doesn't seem to fit in a board room!
Ugh, I don't like this name. I know a girl named Angel and she is by far NOT an Angel.
Aside from my cat, what comes to my mind when I think of the name Angel (on-hel) is a hispanic male. Kind of like the same person who might be called Jesus (hay-soos).
I like this name a lot. It might be nice for a son someday, but I don't know whether I would pronounce it Ayn-Jull so that is sounds angelic, or On-Hell so that it sounds exotic or accentuated. :-)
This is my uncle's name (short for Angelito) so I associate it with the male gender. I think it's nice. Though I don't really like it on girls. =/
Too pretty for a boy in my opinion. Besides, I used to know a boy named Angel, and he was very odd. Hyper all the time (of course, he was only six years old at the time.)
I like Angelus. But the thing I like most about Angel (and I like it very much for a boy) is that it can mean the complete opposite of its obvious meaning. It's just so epic.
For some reason, I just prefer the name "Angel" for a boy. It just seems corny, or overly-pretty for a girl (no offense to any female Angels out there), like naming a girl "beauty," and I would think that it could be a hard/annoying name to live up to; delicate, perfect, beautiful, kind, pure. However, for a boy, I just don't have that expectation--and I have no idea why. I guess it might be from those commercials I'd seen for that TV show "Angel", although I never watched it, the commercials alone were enough to associate the male version of the name with a more strong, less-perfect but still a good person (or trying to be), type character. And because of those commercials, I see the name "Angel" and first think of a boy. (scary the effect TV can have on a person, isn't it?) Although I'm sure if I met a girl named Angel, my impression of the unisex name could, well, probably become more equally unisex. Also, for girls, there are still names like Angela or Angelica, although I don't think those names have the same strong presence as "Angel" might.
This to me sounds like a trailer park name because all the girls that I've known that have had this name are really trashy.
I don't really like this name. It's too cute. I feel really sorry for guys named Angel. It's not like it's a bad name or anything, it's just more feminine in my opinion.
I would really love to give this name to a future son, but maybe he'd get beat up?
I love this name and would consider it for a future daughter. I actually think this name ages pretty well; I can't imagine it making as much an impact as Heaven or Storm (both good names by the way).
My half sister's name is Angel, and that is what I almost ended up with had my mom not nixed it. THANK GOD, down here (North Carolina) there are a millon and one people named Angel, and most of them are BOYS! I think it's ironic that the name is so popular in South Africa, and in the southern states of America, it just goes to show that this is really a small world!
Personally, I don't feel the name gives me a childish persona or that people dont take me seriously. I love my name and always have, so it just depends on the person. I absolutely love my name and I know there are others who feel the same, so don't be discouraged. I say if you like the name-go for it, you'll never know, they may love it as I do.
While I like the meaning and family sentiment (my grandmother chose my name), I sometimes wish I had a more "grown-up" name. I feel sometimes people don't take me seriously. New parents should take this as a warning, names like Candy or Epiphany may sound cute when they are babies but how serious are others going to take them when they are a 33 year old children's right advocate? lol. For awhile I tried using my middle name Renee, but I never could get used to it, lol. I named my kids Lydia (Liddy for short or while they are young) and Matthew (Or Matt) NOT repeating that mistake. :)
I once saw a combination like Angel Heaven Sky. Angel is a nice name but with those kind of middle names it looks (and sounds) a bit strange.
This name is so stupid for a boy. Parents should be bonked in the head for naming their son Angel. Get a freakin life people!
No one name is stupid, probably the stupid is your limited brain. Don't you know that any name has a tradition and a different meaning in every country or culture? It is so obvious! This kind of comment breaks my nerves.About Angel: in Catalonia it is also a popular name, and its pronunciation in Catalan is [an-jal]. It is my name and I'm very proud. An inhabitant of the sky.
It's so weird that someone said that the name Angel is getting really popular in South Africa. My name is Angel, and I live in South Africa. But I have never met or heard of anyone with my name. I would love to meet a guy with my name, that would be cool. My middle name is Blythe which is the Scottish origin name for 'happy' and my name literally means "Angel of Happiness" (that was what my mom intended when she named me, isn't she cool!?)
