Latinized form of Aphthonios. Notable bearers of this name include the Greek sophist and rhetorician Aphthonius of Antioch (4th century AD) and the Roman writer Aelius Festus Aphthonius (4th century AD). Saint Aphthonius was a Persian Christian and ordained priest. He was arrested and slain for the faith during the reign of King Shapur II.
