Meaning & History
Derived from Nahuatl quetzalli, meaning "quetzal feather", from the Nahuatl root quetza "to stand up". The word quetzalli also denotes something precious. The quetzal held great cultural and religious significance to the Aztecs, and other indigenous peoples of Central America. It was a prominent, sacred image in artwork and legends. The name Aquetzalli is also found with the variant spelling Aquetzali.
