Meaning & History

The first element of this name is derived from the Greek adjective ἄριστος (aristos) meaning "best". The second element is derived from either the Greek verb ἀγορεύω (agoreuo) meaning "to orate, to speak publicly" or the Greek noun ἀγορά (agora), which can mean "assembly" as well as "market, marketplace".

This name was borne by several ancient Greek tyrants, such as Aristagoras of Cyme (6th century BC) and Aristagoras of Miletus (5th century BC).
