Meaning & History

From the English word for the insect, derived from Latin cicada meaning "tree-cricket". The insect lives underground, nourishing itself on tree roots, for as long as seventeen years before emerging. In ancient China it was regarded as a symbol of rebirth or immortality. The cicada has also been adopted as a queer symbol.
