Meaning & History

French form and English variant of Crescens. In the English-speaking world, it is now considered a nature name referring to the phase of the moon, derived from Old French creissant, ultimately from Latin crescere "come forth, spring up, grow, thrive".
As an English name, Crescent has been in use from the 17th century onwards, although increasingly rarely so; it was revived in the early 1970s. As a French name, it is now obsolescent.
