Cruz

Since some people in the comments got a little confused here, I will explain:
Cruz, like a ton of other Spanish words, is a traditional given name in Catholic, Spanish-speaking areas. Like Rosario, Concepcion, Natividad, Pilar, Dolores, Consuelo, ect. Cruz is often traditionally used as a girl's name. It might not sound feminine to you if you have had little previous exposure to girls' names that don't end in 'ette', 'elle' or 'a', but that doesn't make it exclusively masculine. Cruz is a good name for EVERYONE.

Since I watched Marimar, I see it mostly as a name for girls. Personally, I like that it will always stand out in a crowd because it's so unusual, while not at all sounding boring, weird or outdated in the bad way, more like vintage-ish. I suppose it's because "Cruz" is a common word in Spanish.

I like it! A good, strong Spanish name. I think it is UNISEX, and it ages well.

Terrible is a matter of opinion. I'm trying to be nice, but the smugness and blatant ignorance is getting on my nerves. Cruz is a Spanish and Portuguese Catholic name, like Pilar, Rosario, Consuelo, Natividad, Dolores, Concepcion, ect. These names are all words that have a religious significance and are traditionally given primarily or exclusively to girls, including Cruz. Cruz means 'cross', referring to the crusifiction of Jesus Christ and important symbol of Christianity. This is obviously a huge part of the Catholic religion, and Christianity as a whole. In Spanish, as previously mentioned, girls are traditionally often given religious word names. The names might not sound particularly feminine to you, but that is all a matter of opinion. Cruz is a traditional name for a girl with a rich cultural history as a feminine given name, and just because it is inappropriate in your misguided opinion does not make it terrible all together.

As a leftist, not that that has anything to do with it but still, I can't stand that idiot Ted Cruz also. And this name seems way too religious and also sort of creepy, and it symbolizes the execution of the supposedly innocent man for the people's sins. Sorry, I can't stand this name.

Where's the religious tolerance? I assume you would be respectful of other people's religious ideology that DOESN'T AFFECT YOU, but I guess not the case here. You can disagree with someone's religious beliefs or what they believe, but that doesn't give you the right to judge every little element that you observe from the outside that has zero effect on you. In Spanish-speaking Catholic tradition (as well as others), people (in particular girls) are given word names of religious significance. The cross is a crucial element and symbol of the Christian religion, and subsequently it is used as a Spanish given name. Don't criticise something that you don't fully comprehend.

My son's name is Cruz and I really like it for a first name. It fits him well, it's short, easy and strong with a trendy touch.

My daughter and son-in-law (he is Italian) would like to name their first son Cruz. I am Hispanic so to us Cruz is mainly used as a last name. That of course doesn't bother them because they think it's a cool name regardless. Nice to read that it is not unusual as a first name.

I would spell this Cruise, just to get away from the Ted Cruz association (I absolutely despise him). I would much rather have my kid associated with Tom Cruise than Ted Cruz.

I wouldn't, because the meaning is completely different. Cruz is a Catholic name meaning 'cross', but cruise is a chunky-monkey boat full of old people. Don't give a person you dislike the glory of ruining something for you.

I have met a few little boys with this name recently. Two were spelled Cruz, one Cruise. I quite like it although I could see it getting trendy in the U.S. at some point.

This sounds like a boy's name to me and I would pronounce it Cruise. Although, I prefer this spelling; Cruz. I like this name because it is different but not totally out there.

While I know Cruz can be a boys' name and don't mind it as such, I still think of it as a feminine name. It's not one of my favorites, though, since it makes me think of Tom Cruise.

This is really a girl's name? I always thought it was a boy's name because the only person I knew with this name was male. It sounds more masculine to me.

I like Cruz, and despite the fact that (yes, I agree) it is terribly trendy, I love the spelling Kruiz. I like Cruz as a GIRL name by the way.
