Meaning & History

Combination of 悦 (etsu) meaing "delight, pleasure, rejoicing" or 越 (etsu) meaning "crossing" and 堂 (dō) meaning "hall."

One bearer of this name was ukiyo-e artist and nihonga painter Etsudō Otake (尾竹 越堂) (1868-1931), part of his professional name likely taken from Echigo Province (越後国), corresponding to today's Niigata Prefecture excluding Sado Island, where he was born.

This name is not typically used as a given name and any usage of it as such is extremely rare.
