Meaning & History

Derived from Georgian ღმერთი (ghmert'i), from Old Georgian ღმერთი ‎(ɣmerti), and ultimately from Proto-Kartvelian *ɣamort- meaning "God". Ghmerti is the supreme god in Georgian mythology and head of all the other deities. He is also the father of the Sun, the Moon, and the khvitis-shvilni who protect mortals from evil. He is also called მორიგე ღმერთი Morige-Ghmerti meaning "God the Director" and დამბადებელი Dambadebeli meaning "the Creator". His name is now mostly used to refer to the Christian God.
