Meaning & History

Derived from the Greek adjective ἡγεμόνιος (hegemonios) meaning "guiding", which in turn is derived from the Greek noun ἡγεμών (hegemon) meaning "leader" as well as "guide" and "commander, chief, ruler" (see Hegemon).

In Greek mythology, this is an epithet of the god Hermes, which references his role as a psychopomp i.e. guide of souls.
