This name combines 海 (kai, umi) meaning "ocean, sea" with 陽 (you, hi) meaning "daytime, heaven, male, positive, sunshine, yang principle" or 洋 (you) meaning "ocean, western style."
As a word, Kaiyō (海洋) means "ocean."
