Meaning & History

This name is best known for being the name of king Kuji of Egrisi (i.e. Colchis), who reigned from 325 BC to 280 BC. Over time, Kuji also became the name of a Colchian dynasty from the historical Tao region (part of the greater Tao-Klarjeti region), which eventually evolved into the Georgian noble family of შალიკაშვილი (Shalikashvili).

The meaning of the king's name is uncertain. One Georgian source theorizes that the name is of Scythian (and therefore Iranian) origin and means "dog". Also compare Digor Ossetian куй (kuj) meaning "dog". The person who first created this entry claimed that Kuji is a compound name of Proto-Kartvelian origin, which consists of the elements quri and jagi, that together mean "clever hunter".
