From Japanese 国 (kuni) meaning "a land, a large place" combined with 寛 (hiro) meaning "tolerant". Other kanji combinations are possible.

Famous bearers are Kunihiro Yamashita, a Japanese football player. He plays as a defender for Liga 1 club Borneo F.C. in Indonesia and Kunihiro Iwasaki, a Japanese swimmer and Olympic medalist.
