Meaning & History

This name combines 久 (kyuu, ku, hisa.shii) meaning "long time" or 九 (kyuu, ku, kokono, kokono.tsu) meaning "nine" with 兵衛 (bee) (see Hyōe).

It was commonly used in the Edo Period (1603-1868), especially among the chōnin (townsman) class. Nowadays, it's not given at all to boys.
