Meaning & History

Derived from Etruscan lars "lord", originally an honorary appellation which became a given name. This name was borne by Lars Tolumnius (Larth Tulumnes in Etruscan, d. 437 BC), the most famous king of the wealthy Etruscan city-state of Veii. He is best remembered for instigating a war with Rome that ended in a decisive Roman victory.
