Meaning & History
Transferred use of the surname Majella. From an Anglicized form of the surname of Saint Gerardo Maiella, an 18th-century Italian miracle worker who is regarded as the patron saint of all aspects of pregnancy. His surname was originally taken from an Italian place name (La Maiella massif) which may derive from Latin magnus "great". This was a middle name of Princess Nadezhda of Bulgaria (1899-1958), whose mother died giving birth to her.
