Meaning & History

Derived from the Latin “Marolus”, from the Latin “mare”, meaning “who comes from the sea, a resident of the coast”, which in turn derives from the Proto-Italic “*mari”, meaning “sea”. Marolus (Italian: Marolo) was Archbishop of Milan from 408 to 423. He is honoured as a Saint in the Catholic Church and his feast day is traditionally celebrated on April 23.
