Possibly derived from Ancient Greek μέγας (megas) meaning "great, mighty, big" combined with either μήδεα (medea) meaning "plans, council, cunning" or μέδω (medo) "to protect, rule over". This was the name of a queen of Thespiae in Greek mythology, in some accounts the mother of fifty daughters by king Thespius.
