From Spanish, from the third word of the Latin name colōnia Augusta Ēmerita, from the feminine of ēmeritus "veteran" (also means "earned, merited; retired, but retaining an honorific version of previous title"), referring to the Iberian city being founded as an imperial veterans’ colony. Merida is the name of several cities and places around the world. Merida is the name of the lead protagonist in the Disney animated film 'Brave' (2013). She is the rebellious teenaged daughter of the King and Queen of a Scottish kingdom during an unspecified time in the early Medieval era.
