Sounds like a great great grandmother name, also too associated with Courage the Cowardly Dog.

This is a very underrated name. I find Muriel to be shiny, aquatic, and mature. Absolutely brilliant in the way it stands out compared to other girl names.

Muriel is such a sweet, delicate name. It sounds like someone who would be a good listener. I love the association to Muriel from Courage the Cowardly Dog too.

I can see this name on an older woman, but at the same time, I can kind of see it on a little girl. I personally wouldn't use it, but it's still a very nice name.

My late mother was named Muriel. She was a selfless beautiful person all her life and passed away at 96. She is sadly missed by her 3 children, 8 grandchildren and her 9 great grandchildren. When looking for a name for our new 40 ft sailing yacht coming shortly, I stumbled upon the origin of Muriel being “of the bright sea”. I cannot think of a more appropriate name for a graceful and loyal friend for life. Muriel it is.

I don't really like this name much. I don't like the way it sounds. The mur and iel together both sound really weird when said out loud.

As you probably can tell my name is Muriel as well. I am not by any means "old" but people do have a hard time placing my age by my name. My name is unusual, but so am I. I wouldn't change it for the world.
I'm not sure how it would sound on a man. I have never really heard of a male Muriel. That being said, I am normally the only Muriel in the room.
I did find out an interesting tidbit of info. I named my daughter Amelia, after Amelia Earhart. Reading some info to my daughter about her name I found out Amelia's sister's name was originally Muriel.

I looked my name up and it means 'of the bright sea'. So I like it. Not because it sounds "delicate and soft" but because the sea can be tolerant of one thing one minute and then destroy someone the next for disrespecting it or something close to it. But I don't know, it TRULY depends on what you feel about the name. Not what others feel about it. My great grandma is who I was named after.

It reminds you of cereal because nothing else rhymes with it.

Muriel was a hard name to grow up with but now I like the fact that it is unusual. I did not meet another until I was 49! What I like about it I need only give my first name when I call someone because generally they only know one. As it never was popular (at least in my life time) no one can actually guess what generation I'm a part of. Also, when someone yells "Muriel" 999 times out of 1000 they mean me.

I LOVE the name Muriel and I do think it is a little "old" but HEY gramma's were kids once too and you might have guessed already, yes, my name is Muriel but I still love the name sure I don't excatly look like a Muriel, maybe a Milly or Missy or even Lilly but I have a great story behind it!

This was my grandmother's name, a beautiful name for a beautiful person. I as well don't see how people say it's old sounding or masculine, or ugly. It's uncommon, the pronunciation is beautiful if you pronounce it right, and it's meaning is wonderful.

I used to think that this name was "grannyish" too, but then I met a girl a little older than me with the name Muriel. It's really funny, because she is one of the most vibrant, energetic people I know, and the name still suits her perfectly.

I totally agree with the poster above. After all, by 2050, people will probably be thinking, "Madison/Sarah/Britney? Ew, that's a grandma's name!" Muriel is a beautiful, classy name that is due for a comeback, so if you're considering naming your daughter this, go for it!
(Though I can't really see it on a boy - there have been too many well-known female Muriels, so a male Muriel might get teased.)

I love the name Muriel! This name should make a come back! I don't see why some people think it's grannyish, grannies were young too, plus names of today will be soon grannyish in the year 2030. Anyways, Muriel is a gorgeous name! Go ahead and don't be afraid to name your daughter this!

I'm not sure I like the name for a boy, but I just love the way this name rolls off the tongue. In fact, if I ever have a daughter, I think I'm naming her Muriel Alannah.

I love the name Muriel and for some reason I always have. I agree with the person above me -- it's quite beautiful in both meaning and sound.

I like Muriel because of its beautiful meaning and sound. I really don't understand these people who say it is a male or a "grannyish" name - there are always the names of the moment, names that are in, but that's usually ephemeral (except perhaps those eternal and utterly common names, like Mary or John) and the popular names of nowadays will be considered old-fashioned tomorrow, and the old-fashioned ones of yesterday might be popular again, it's a cycle. That's why Muriel had its peak in the 1920's, but came back to the girl's top 1,000 in the US in 1990 (401st), so there must be young Muriels out there. Anyway, I think a name should be chosen based on what they mean and what they sound like, not on how popular the name currently is - that's so superficial.

Why on EARTH would you put Muriel on a boy!? Madness!

It's not the right name for ANY child, girl or boy. It makes me think of a grey-haired old grandmother with a cardigan, a blouse and broach, a long skirt, a pair of glasses, and her hair-do tied in a bun. Enid and Beryl are very much in the same category.
