Meaning & History

The god of shellfish and the charioteer of the sea. He is the only son out of the fifty Nereides, is described as being boyishly handsome and was also dearly loved by the sea creatures. In mythology, he rejected Aphrodite's invitation to Olympus, preferring his life at sea, resulting in him turning into a shellfish by a scorned Aphrodite. In other myths, he is a consort of Poseidon and was made his charioteer, but shortly afterwards was changed into a shellfish by Anteros.
