From Japanese 宣 (nobu) meaning "declare, announce, proclaim" combined with 長 (naga) meaning "chief, head, leader". Other kanji combinations are possible. A famous bearer was Nobunaga Oda, a powerful Daimyō of Japan in the late 16th century who attempted to unify Japan during the late Sengoku period.
