Meaning & History

Means "from the kingdom of Panchala" in Sanskrit. This is an epithet of Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas in the Indian epic the Mahabharata.

It is proposed that the kingdom of Panchala was formed from five tribes or clans, its name being derived from पञ्च (pancha), the Sanskrit word for the number five.
