If you wish to name your child this, I suggest spelling it with one "l" (Philip), as the two "l" version looks sorta repetitive.

Someone mentioned a singer here and they called him Phillip Phillips but was known by the name Phil Phillips. I own his old record, Sea of Love, which was also featured in a movie of the same name, staring Al Pacino.

Phillip Gallagher is one of the main characters in both the US and UK versions of the television series Shameless. He goes by Lip, which I think is an interesting alternative to Phil.

This name remains the same in contemporary Greek. It derives from the Greek words: ΦΙΛΟΣ-ΙΠΠΟΣ =friend of horse. Consequently the correct spelling is single l and double p.
