Meaning & History

Either derived from the Latin noun potentia meaning "power, might, force" or from the Latin adjective potens meaning "able, strong, powerful, potent" (see Potens).

This name was borne by a Roman tribune who was killed at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 AD. He was the son of the Roman general Ursicinus.
