From Japanese 麗 (rei, here pronounced re) meaning "beautiful, lovely", combined with 美 meaning "beautiful", and 奈 (na), a phonetic character popularly used in feminine names. Other kanji combinations are also possible. This name is borne by the character Remina Ōguro (大黒麗美奈 Ōguro Remina), the protagonist of the horror manga series Remina (地獄星レミナ Jigokuboshi Remina, lit. 'Hellstar Remina') by Junji Ito. In the series, Remina becomes the subject of fame and adoration after her father Dr Tsuneo Ōguro (大黒恒夫 Ōguro Tsuneo) discovers a mysterious rogue planet and chooses to name the planet 'Remina' after her. However, as it becomes clear that Planet Remina is on a collision course with Earth, destroying anything in its path, this adoration turns to fear and madness. Eventually, Remina has to flee from a mob led by a malevolent cult who believe that sacrificing her will end the cataclysm enacted by her namesake.
