Meaning & History

Derived from Latin robigo meaning "red blight, wheat rust", referring to a red fungus that could infest crops. This was the name of a minor god in Roman mythology, summoned for protection against agricultural diseases such as mold, mildew and rust. The festival Robigalia, where non-edible animals were sacrificed, was held on April 25. He also had a female counterpart named Robigo.
