Sage

Very herbal. Like Heather or Rosemary.

Sage is probably one of my favorite unisex names. It seems pretty gender neutral to me, and sometimes it's kind of difficult to find names like that. It sounds so clear and nice. I love the meanings, especially because it's related the the Sage plant. The other meaning about a wise person is awesome too.

Funny how people will be fast to say Sage is an ugly herb compared to lavender. They are of the same family. There are soooo many different types of Sage that are beautiful and even look like lavender. Difference is Sage is more beautiful in a heal your body kind of way, it scientifically is recognized for killing pathogens in the air. So it may "smell awful" it's protecting you from truly awful stuff in the air and that's beautiful. Some folks should open their minds beauty isn't one form only.

What?! This name is super cute! Besides "Sage" being a spice or meaning a wise person, people use Sage to repel bad energy. I mean, parents have been naming their kids after plants for hundreds of years so it's not strange at all. Even if it's a name everyone is talking about, doesn't mean everyone is using it. It's short, easy to say, easy to spell, has a positive meaning and it works for a girl or boy. :) It's the only unisex name that isn't overused and I actually like.

It's fine, I do prefer Paige, I love Paige, Sage is okay though, my sister's friend is named Sage.

These comments are the worst! I mean, come on! Sage is such a beautiful name, and it ages well. Works for both boys and girls. Also, it’s not just a spice. It also has another meaning (he is a “wise old Sage”). Wouldn’t hurt you if people called you wise.

As someone going by the name Sage, I think it's a true gender-neutral name. This name is a beautiful name, not too feminine or masculine. Sage is a good name for female, male, gender-fluid, non-binary etc. I barely ever get made fun of for this name and have gotten compliments from it. My friend once told me that I should change my legal name to Sage when I got older and I agree with her.

I love the name Sage. It works beautifully on both genders, in my opinion. It sounds so calming and tranquil. It brings to my mind a serene pasture and beautiful, vivid green hills. I also think of the nice herb, of course. I actually really appreciate that this name doesn't bring a certain gender to mind. Although I feel like most “unisex” names typically lean slightly more feminine or masculine, Sage is just truly gender-neutral, which I like. No one should have to feel limited because of their gender, or anything else, really.

I think of Sage as a girl's name. Maybe it’s because I used to work with a lady who had a daughter named Saige.

My name is Sage (with the middle name Ryan). As both are unisex, and commonly used for boys' names I used to hate it. I thought that it was too boyish or too unique, but as I grew older I began to realize that it was actually quite a beautiful name. I have always been told that it was very pretty/unique/beautiful/strong. Around my teen years I saw it as unique in a good way and grew to realize that with it being common on a boy, it was really pretty as a girls name.

I used to hate the fact that I couldn't have a cool nickname like other kids, but as I got older people endearingly called me Sagie (Say - Gee) or Sagay (Sah -Gay) or Saje (Sah - jay), and my toddler cousin sometimes calling me Say Say (which I find absolutely adorable). I was only ever picked on once by one person in 6th grade. He said that my name looked like Sag E, and then called me Saggy which he then continued to call me for the next year. Which I definitely was not saggy or fat or any such thing.

Sage is one of my top names for boys! I was surprised to see that most people on here view it as a feminine name as it comes off more masculine to me, but I now see that it could be very cute for a girl as well. Sage is a wonderful name because it means "wisdom" - if you could give your daughter anything, wouldn't you want her to have wisdom? This name could be a girl or boy’s name. My friend recently had a baby boy she named Sage. The name fits him perfectly.

I like this name better spelled S-A-I-G-E because the 'I' makes it seems more like a name to me than compared to an actual Sage. I personally feel this is more feminine but I guess it can go either way.

I love the name Sage on anyone of any gender! I’m a gender neutral person whose chosen name is Sage! I chose this name because it is not feminine like my deadname is, I wanted a unisex name to reflect my neutral gender, and it’s a unique name with great meanings! I feel that whether the name Sage is given to a boy, a girl, or any other gender that it will fit due to it being a unisex name.

The name isn’t very common so I doubt other children will even recognise it as a “girl's name” and therefore I doubt they’ll tease (and do you really want to live your life worrying about what a schoolyard bully thinks anyway?)

Either way, I don’t think people get teased about their names too much unless it’s really bizarre or sound like a swear word or something. And since this is a UNISEX name, it’s certainly not unheard of for boys. So I say go for it. Everybody else can just get used to it.

Sage would be a good middle name for Heather or Lavender. I wouldn't use it as a first name, because the child would probably get KFC jokes about 11 herbs and spices.

I agree with GoodNames because Sage is an adorable name. If y’all are spontaneous and fun you can name your child Sage because it can be a badass name and it is really cool, but I’d only name a girl Sage because if that’s what you’d name your son he’d get bullied.

Sage is another unisex name I don't like along with Hollis, Avery and Jordan. It's boring to me and does not sound very pleasant. I would not name my son a name like Sage, I would name him something stronger and more masculine. I also think it's too boring for a girl and not interesting.

This is actually my name, I'm named Sage. I also know another 2 girls and a male with this name. It has always seemed feminine to me, because I am a girl, but even in definition, it's portrayed as a wise old man. It's all up to the eye of the beholder to be brutally honest.

I think the preference for a name being for a boy or girl is how each person associates their personal idea, culture or experience. That goes for any name. My husband named our son Sage who also has some Japanese heritage. In Japanese it's a boys name. It would be pronounced "Se-i-ji" the "i" like "ee". There has never been an issue about his name being teased and we live in a very large district. American meaning is wiseman, prophet. Japanese is philosophers, scholars, lawful and just. I would like to think that his name has a reflection in his character. (The funny thing is jokingly my husband suggested "Spider" as a name first. I bet I know how he would of turned out lol!)

I think that the Sage boy/girl name argument in this thread is admittedly legitimate considering its unisex nature. My wife and I have just found out that our third child is going to be a boy and we are going with Sage. I think that the people that are saying that Sage is definitely a girl name are thinking about the plant/herb while the folks that like the name for a boy are thinking about the old "wise man" aspect. I like the idea of a boy whose name is synonymous with intellect, intuition and the power of discernment. I have no interest in a boy name that sounds macho or tough because I do not want my son to wrongfully think that macho or tough is what being manly is about. Manliness is respectful, kind, emotionally strong and quietly courageous. Boys and men that show macho, aggressive attitudes are usually very fragile emotionally. They hide their fear and weakness under a suit of armor.

It seems like a lot of people think Sage is more of a girls' name than a boys' name, but I really think it sounds better for a boy. It sounds too harsh on a girl, at least for me. I imagine a female Sage as modern and a bit stand-offish. Hello. My name is Sage. I'm male and was born in '91. I was never really teased as a kid about my name. I grew up in NV so the worst thing that anybody said was "(guffaw)... Sagebrush" But otherwise I've always loved my name and get compliments for it sometimes. I've met maybe 3 people in my life with the same name. All female. I'll admit that's a little discouraging, haha.

I think it could go well with female or male. It'd be a good choice if you're genderfluid/nonbinary/etc. I have a few ideas in mind but this is higher up on the list.

I have a 12 year old son with the name SAGE. He does not get teased about his name and in actual fact people compliment the name. Sage loves his name. It can be used for a boy or girl, however I personally believe it is a boy's name.

This is my name and I am just beginning to grow into it at age nineteen. I get lots of compliments but I also get a lot of people who can't seem to stop calling me Paige. Ha! All of my favorite things: herbs, wisdom, and myths. It also has the rare quality of being a truly unisex name. I like it on either gender, but prefer it for a boy. Boys need more plant names on their side; almost all plant names (usually flowers) are girls' names. Moss is the only other boys' plant name I can think of, and it was originally a diminutive of Moses. In conclusion, for either gender, it is best suited as a middle name.

I really like the name Sage for a girl but love it for a boy. I think of it as the herb meaning for a girl and the wise meaning for a boy. I really wanted to use it for our boys name but everyone told me that they thought of it as a girls name and said he would get teased so we didn't end up using it which was a real bummer. If only people didn't think of the herb first. Some people suggested Gage instead but that sounded too mechanical to me. I haven't found a boys name I like more.

This name always makes me think of the song "Scarborough Fair". Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

I hated this name at first, but eventually I grew to like it (though not enough to want to use it on my own future child). It's a bit of an offbeat nature name. I only like it on girls; it doesn't sound like a boy's name at all.

I love the idea of Sage as a middle name--but for a girl. I agree with a previous poster, the name Sage for a boy seems a bit weak. I like Phaedra Sage.

I think Sage is more a girl's name but I like it for both.

It's not a terrible name, but I don't understand why it's been rising in popularity. It doesn't sound very pleasant with the final sound, and the name will sound annoying in nasal pronunciation, and nasal speech seems strangely common for many American women's speech. I honestly doubt it's some type of speech organ feature they can't help. The feigned stupidity and naivete in the form of bubbliness in speech has basically led to the state of things in which this name would be better used in some other country.
