Meaning & History

"Sanjuro" is a Japanese name meaning "thirty years old" or "thirtieth man". It was popularized by the 1961 Akira Kurosawa film "Yojimbo" in which the protagonist, played by Toshiro Mifune, introduces himself as Sanjuro, before noting his age is closer to 40. It was popularized in the Edo Period, in which names ending in -ro (son or man) were very popular. Historical figures named Sanjuro include Tani Sanjuro, born at an unknown date and a member of the Shinsengumi police force (1863-1868)
