Meaning & History
Comes from ハオルチア・シジマ (Haoruchia-Shijima), the Japanese word for Haworthia, a large genus of small succulent plants native to Southern Africa. It can also come from Japanese 四 (shi) meaning "four" or 志 (shi) meaning "will, motive" combined with 島 (jima) meaning "island", or 黙 (shijima) meaning "silence". Other kanji combinations are possible. Cianwood City Gym Leader Chuck (who is also known as Shijima) in the Japanese version of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, Heartgold, and Soulsilver is a fictional bearer of this name.
