From Japanese 勝 (shou) meaning "wins, victories" combined with 一 (ichi) meaning "one". Other kanji combinations are possible.

Famous bearers are Shoichi Funaki, a Japanese–American professional wrestler and color commentator signed by WWE, where he is a former one-time Cruiserweight Champion and a one-time Hardcore Champion and Shōichi Watanabe, an English scholar and one of Japan’s foremost cultural critics. He was born in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture. A graduate of Sophia University, where he obtained his Master’s degree, he completed his doctorate at University of Münster in 1958.
