Meaning & History

The first element of this Germanic name is derived from sis, which is probably a contraction of sigis (see Sigisbert). However, this is not completely certain - the element might also come from Old High German sisesang "sad song" or from Old Swedish sisu "solemn lament." The second element is derived from Gothic nand "bravery" (or from Gothic nanthjan "to venture, to risk, to dare"). Sisenand was the name of a 7th-century king of the Visigoths in Hispania.
